Full Renovation

This was famed illustrator Charles Addams’ original waterfront ranch style house and cartoon studio.

A financial professional who purchased the home sought a full renovation to create a larger space for entertaining, inside and out. Given the waterfront location, we worked closely with Southampton town to navigate an extensive wetland permitting process and fulfilled requirements for native RE-VEGETATION of plants. The result was a stunning bachelor’s retreat perfect for summer entertainment while supporting the surrounding environment.

Exterior & Grounds

The entire home, with the exception of the foundation, was removed. The new exterior was designed to reflect the owner’s preferences and to support the overall traditional resort motif. We designed a wrap around porch and railing system with a somewhat modern take on this waterside large overhanging roof structure.

Diane Sjoholm landscape designer created flower gardens around meandering blue stone paths and shaded patios. Sjoholm designed a free form gunite pool with a low, rugged stone waterfall. Gardens were planted throughout, giving the grounds easy passages and visually stunning focal points. Sound screen material was brought in to block road noise.

The old siding was recycled, remilled, and reinstalled as horizontal wall paneling in the major circulation areas.

Interior

The renovation resulted in a master bedroom, two guest rooms and three and a half bathrooms. The master suite was located on the second story addition, including private deck space facing the east to capture spectacular cove and ocean sunrise views.

As the focus of this home was recreation, we created space for a grand piano, leisure seating, and a large dining space for parties. The detached artist’s studio was transformed into a “man cave,” for the owner’s solitary retreat from his entertainment spaces.

Kitchen & Bath

The kitchen was also a main focus for entertaining guests. This renovation included the installation of a commercial gas grill with a large stainless steel hood. The kitchen was angled to be directly accessible to a large, elevated wooden deck, optimal for catching the sunset.
