New Construction

The home is located at a high elevation on a mountain plateau offering 360 degree views of a very historic area of Vermont.

The design challenge was balancing to provide as much glass structure to support these spectacular views while creating the traditional farmhouse design including covered wood decks on the two main north and south axes.

This modern farmhouse was designed as a retreat for a bachelor, his grown children and grandchildren. His main residence was based in south Florida, so the 400 acre New England estate provided a different seasonal experience during the winter holidays and satisfied a desire for the slower pace of Vermont.

Exterior & Grounds

The land was assembled over many years and included an old farmhouse, a Historic Register octagonal three story wood cow barn, hunting bunkhouse, small stables and many acres of hay fields. Two lawn areas were seeded for those warm days when small children could play outside.

I selected a standing seam metal roof for snow loads, traditional small exposure bevel siding with painted wood trim for the exterior materials. Extra care was taken in the construction, exceeding the state codes to prevent the gusty winter wind intrusion with super insulation, wall sealing and quality windows and doors. To complete the exterior style, red brick was used for the two chimneys.

The old siding was recycled, remilled, and reinstalled as horizontal wall paneling in the major circulation areas.

Interior

The master suite comprising bedroom, closet, bath, study and library were placed on the first floor in a separate wing from all first level public living spaces and the guest facilities on the second floor. The house was designed to feel warm and cozy for two people and yet adapting well to host eight or more guests with privacy and comfort.

All entry foyers have a wind lock and provided much winter coat and boot storage to create tidy cold entries. Three large wood burning fireplaces with a concealed fire wood vertical lift from basement storage was installed.

Kitchen & Bath

The large kitchen and dining covered deck provided room for a grille which all looks out to the setting sun and pasture land below. A large L-shaped island with seating for 8 guests was designed so all could partake in the meal preparation without getting in the chef’s way. A large Cosmo range with wall pot filler and two separate freestanding 36 inch wide Thermador freezer and refrigerator were requested.
